Early Spring
What I should be doing now in March
Plant out Januarys chitted tates (10 weeks ready), Chit potatoes for maincrop, plant out Januarys broad beans, plant out onion sets, cover strawberries with cloches to encourage early fruiting.
Sow
Carrtos, onions, spinich, peas, leeks, parsnip, broad beans, marrow, celeriac, red cabbage, squash, turnips, beetroot, celery, spring onions, tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers.
Sow any marigolds, tagetes, verbina, dahlias, sweetpeas, repot any succulants, cut the lawn!
01/03/09 - 11 degrees in Greenhouse and very cold and frosty. repotted (16/1) red cabbage. Put beetroot and lettuce in the garden.
04/03/09 - Potted 6 big pots herbs, Basil, corriander, chives, peppermint, put in landing window hard frost tonight.
05/03/09 - 2 parsnips showing in the bathroom window 22 degrees in greenhouse pm.
08/03/09 - wk 1 parsnips 3 showing and 2 snips from wk 2.
09/03/09 - wk 1 snips5 showing and all 4 snips from wk 2. Set a 40 tray (20 cells) half of spring onion furio, and the other half of beetroot chioggia pink, in greenhouse propagator lid, (all showing 16/3) , set 4 squash in 1 black square pot put in toilet window. (put in gh 11/3).
10/03/09 - Set 4 parsnip in loo rolls, added to wkly snip propagator in bathroom window.
14/03/09 - 19 degrees gh pm, 2 spring onions showing from (9/3), rosemary, parsley, peppermint and sweet basil all showing, 1 snip up for wk 3. planted 2/12/08 spring onions in garden, took 3 elephant garlic out of pots look mouldy and put in gh, 1 has roots repotted.
15/03/09 - Beetroot showing 9/3) planted 24/1 spring onions and 16 lettuce in 2s. Cut lawn for first time.
16/03/09 - Planted (16/1) beetroot out 1 row of 10 in garden , set 13 peas early onwards in pots, 3 marrow, 3 squash in pots in propagator.
17/03/09 - Red cabbage poorly put lid on and drying out a bit, set 16 peas early onward 1/2 a seed tray with lid in bathroom for a test.
18/03/09 - Put herbs in gh, light frost.
21/03/09 - 25 degrees pm, repotted chillis from 12/2, lost 3 cherry toms and 1 basket tom and 1 cucumber, peas showing, 1/3 beetroot and spring onions all up. put januarys 16/1 broad beans outside, still in pots to harden off.
24/03/09 - Repotted 10 red cherry from 12/2 from sow and grow to black pots, set 4 snips wk4. Moved 17/3 test peas downstairs in kitchen window, as all 15 up! and put 16/3 peas into bathroom from gh with lid on in pots. ( love it in the bathroom)
25/03/09 - 23 degrees pm very windy and wet though, 2 snips showing from wk 3.
28/03/09 - 6 peas from 16/3 in bathroom some mouldy to wet, red cabbage all died set 40! 1 left put in propagator, very windy and hard showers, repotted 1/2 seed tray test peas (17/3)into black pots in gh. Made 10 1/2 bottle cloches, put over beetroot in garden.
29/03/09 - 22 degrees very hot and sunny, put 14 bigger beans 21/2 outside with jans beans, set 40 cell turnips snowball with lid.
30/03/09 - Set lupin, delphiniums in 1/2 seed trays with lids. set 4 parsnips wk5. set 15 durham cabbage in 1 pot in prpgator. and set the rest of 16/1 beetroot near last years thats sprung up !
31/03/09 - 22 degrees am, set cottage seed flowers in garden near butterfly bush. its like summer 30 degrees pm in gh.
Horray springs here!!
